JOKE OF THE DAY: The Napping Dog and the Note

An old, tired-looking dog wandered into a man’s yard one warm afternoon.

From the shiny collar around his neck and his round, well-fed belly, it was clear this dog had a home — and someone who cared for him.

The man bent down and smiled. “Well, hello there, old boy.”

The dog wagged his tail lazily, trotted up, and leaned his weight against the man’s leg as if they were old friends. The man gave him a few gentle pats on the head, then went about watering his flowers.

When he turned around a few minutes later, the dog had followed him into the house.

He walked down the hallway like he knew the place, curled up in a quiet corner by the radiator, gave a long, satisfied sigh, and fell sound asleep.

An hour later, the dog woke up, stretched, trotted to the door, and barked once.

The man opened the door, and off the dog went — back in the direction he came from.

The next day, like clockwork, the dog returned.

Same time. Same calm, confident walk.

He wagged his tail politely, walked past the man, and went straight inside. Again, he curled up in his usual spot, napped for exactly an hour, then left.

This went on for weeks.

Every afternoon, around three o’clock, the dog arrived for his nap — never late, never early, and always leaving right on time.

The man grew fond of the old visitor. He started calling him “Buddy.”

He even laid out a small blanket and a bowl of water near the dog’s chosen corner.

Still, curiosity nagged at him. Who owned this clever creature? Did they know he was sneaking away each day for a quiet nap at a stranger’s house?

One afternoon, he decided to find out.

He grabbed a small piece of paper and a pen, wrote a note, and pinned it gently to the dog’s collar.

It read:

“I’d like to find out who owns this sweet, wonderful dog and ask if you’re aware that almost every afternoon, your dog comes to my house for a nap.”

Buddy wagged his tail, as if in approval, and trotted off home.

The next day, the man waited eagerly by the window.

Sure enough — right on schedule — the old dog ambled up the yard again, looking pleased with himself.

This time, there was a note pinned to his collar.

The man unpinned it and began to laugh before he even finished reading.

It said:

“He lives in a house with six children, two under the age of three. He’s just trying to catch up on his sleep. May he come back tomorrow?”

The man laughed so hard he had to sit down.

He scribbled a quick reply and pinned it back:

“Anytime. I’ll leave the door open and the blanket ready.”

And that’s how their unusual friendship continued.

Every afternoon, the tired dog showed up, gave the man a polite look of recognition, and then wandered to his favorite spot for his daily nap.

Sometimes, he’d bring a small toy in his mouth — a chewed-up tennis ball, a stuffed bear, or a sock that had clearly been “borrowed” from somewhere.

The man always returned the item later, pinning it to Buddy’s collar with a new note:

“Thanks for the gift, but I think this belongs to one of the kids.”

Buddy would come back the next day, seemingly amused, as if to say, “They have plenty more where that came from.”

The Day the Notes Changed Everything

One afternoon, Buddy didn’t come.

The man checked the window every hour, wondering if maybe the weather had kept him away. The next day came — still no Buddy.

A week passed. Nothing.

He missed that little routine more than he expected — the quiet nap, the wagging tail, the company.

Then, one morning, as he was raking leaves in the yard, he looked up and saw that familiar slow, steady trot.

Buddy was back.

But this time, there was a large bandage on his paw and a new note on his collar.

The man’s heart sank as he opened it.

It read:

“Buddy had a small accident chasing a squirrel but he’s doing better. The kids made him a card, and they said he kept looking toward your house, so I let him visit again. Thank you for being kind to our old man.”

The man smiled, his eyes misting just a little. He kneeled down, gave Buddy a gentle pat, and whispered, “Welcome home, pal.”

A Routine of Friendship

From that day forward, the man made sure Buddy’s corner was always ready.

He even placed a little sign above the blanket that read:

“Reserved for Buddy — The Hardest Working Dog in the Neighborhood.”

And whenever Buddy showed up, the man would sit quietly nearby, reading or sipping tea, while the dog snored softly beside him.

One day, out of curiosity, the man wrote another note:

“If Buddy ever misses a nap, just know the old man next door misses him, too.”

The next morning, Buddy arrived wearing a new collar tag. It said, engraved in shiny silver letters:

“Buddy — Professional Napper. Licensed in Two Homes.”

Years Later

Time passed.

Buddy grew older, slower, grayer around the muzzle. But he never missed a visit.

Then, one autumn morning, he didn’t show up again.

Days went by.

Then a small envelope appeared in the man’s mailbox. Inside was a note and a photo of Buddy lying peacefully on a blanket surrounded by the six children who loved him.

The note read:

“Buddy passed away quietly last night, after one last nap in his favorite corner. We thought you should know. Thank you for giving him another home — one where he found peace.”

The man sat on his porch for a long time, the letter trembling in his hands.

That afternoon, he placed Buddy’s blanket under the tree in the yard, beside a small wooden sign that read:

“Here rests Buddy — everyone’s good boy.”

And every day after that, the man would sit near that tree, drinking his coffee, smiling at the memory of the old dog who just wanted a quiet place to rest.

Moral of the Story

Sometimes, the best friendships aren’t built on words or promises — just quiet understanding, shared moments, and a little kindness.

The old dog didn’t need much — just a place to rest and someone who didn’t ask questions.

And in return, he reminded a lonely man that love doesn’t always bark, or beg, or ask for attention.

Sometimes, it just curls up in your hallway…
and sleeps peacefully, knowing it’s home. ❤️

Beautiful story of the dog, his two homes and love they all shared, I felt tears when he passed away!
Love comes in many forms! My own dog over 8 years with me passed in September last year, coming in the bedroom wanting to get on the bed with me, after she was having blood problems! I knew it may be the last time, and picked her up and she laid down beside me, went up to the pillow, placed her head beside me, got up again and placed her head by my knee, and I realized she was breathing in a rough way, and I asked God to either heal her or stop her pain. 2 breaths and she was gone! I was so thankful to spend that time with her and love her as she went into eternity! I cried and cried and buried her the next morning. I still miss her more than I can say!
I was the first human she ever saw, born under an enclosed area under a porch, I knew the mother had had her babies, then she disappeared about 4 weeks later, and I went looking trying to find them! I found a small opening that I removed the board from, and 5 little bundles of joy came out, and walked and licked all over my feet! I had the pleasure of being their first human contact and filmed them on video, then went to find my lady friend, and told her! She kept one male, Buddy, and told me she kept my little Fluffy for me and found homes for the others! Buddy misses his sister and has become so much more loving since she left us! GOD is so good to us, and always supplies all our needs!
Love comes in many forms and ways, but always from our Lord!
To God be all thanks and glory for His great love and sacrifice for us!
His love in Jesus Christ is the greatest love story ever!
I pray you know Him and love Him with your whole heart, mind and strength!
I would love to meet you and hope to share eternity with you all in Heaven!
Don’t miss Heaven! Jesus is coming back, be ready! Maranatha!
